Repeat Prescriptions

Medication Quantities - August 2017

Wasted or unused medicine is a serious and growing problem within the NHS which we would like you to help us tackle!

It is estimated that as much as £300million is wasted every year on unused or partially used medication. Therefore, over the next couple of months, we will be tightening up the quantities of repeat (and acute) medication issued, to a maximum of 2 months/56 days at a time.

We are aware that there have been discrepancies over the years with this, with some patients having been issued 3 months’ worth (or more) at a time. If you usually receive more than 2 months at a time, this quantity will be reduced to 2 months at some point over the next few months (with over 4000 patients on regular repeat medication it may take us a while to amend all!).

If you currently receive only 1 month/28 day's worth at a time, we will be amending this to 2 months in due course. Again, it will take time to amend all. However, if you prefer to stick to 1 month for any reason, then do please let us know.

The local CCG (Clinical Commissioning Group) actually advise that 1 month should be the normal maximum, but as a practice we understand that this may have financial and practical implications for some patients, hence the practice policy being to give 2 months.

N.B. If you are going on holiday, or abroad, for any length of time, then we may, as a one-off, issue a maximum of 3 months’/84 days’ worth provided you submit a written request for this.

Electronic Prescription Service

Did you know that the practice can now send your repeat prescriptions 'electronically' to the pharmacy of your choice?

In order to do this you will need to 'nominate' a pharmacy (this can be done either at the pharmacy, or at the surgery) - this does not need to be the one closest to where you live. You could choose the pharmacy that it most convenient to where you work or shop. For more details on this service, and to decide whther this is right for you, please read the patient leaflet attached below.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT IF YOU HAVE BEEN ASKED BY A PHARMACY PREVIOUSLY TO 'NOMINATE' THEM FOR WHEN THIS SERRVICE GOES LIVE, YOUR PRESCRIPTIONS WILL NOW BE GOING STRAIGHT TO THAT PHARMACY. IN SOME INSTANCES YOU MAY HAVE NOMINATED A PHARMACY WHEN YOU WERE AT A PREVIOUS ADDRESS SO IT MAY BE BEST TO CHECK WITH THE SURGERY OR YOUR USUAL CURRENT PHARMACY TO SEE IF YOU ALREADY HAVE SUCH A NOMINATION SO THAT THIS CAN BE CHANGED IF NECESSARY.

We would also like ask for your patience and understanding whilst we are getting used to this new system! Whilst we have all had training and will do our very best to ensure everything goes smoothly with as little impact as possible to you, the patients, inevitably the odd mistake may happen. Please be assured that we will rectify any such mistakes as swiftly as possible.

Requests can be left in the posting box in reception or posted. You may also fax your prescription requests to the surgery on (01223) 213459 or use the online system (details below).

We are unable to answer any emails in connection with medical conditions.

Online Services

You can order your repeat prescriptions online.

The Practice is pleased to provide patients with access to its Clinical System via a Secure Web Interface.

To use SystmOnline you will need a Practice ID number and Access ID number which is obtained from the practice, and, in conjunction with a password, will be unique to you.

Issues raised in comments may be discussed between relevant members of the Practice. The information is used for quality monitoring purposes, in line with the expectations of the patients submitting the feedback.
